# Dani Robes A singer-songwriter, lyricist, composer, and Israeli musician considered one of the central figures in the Israeli music scene. Robes is known for her original songs in pop and rock genres, and for her significant contribution to Israeli musical culture over decades. ## Biography Dani Robes was born on December 24, 1957, in Kibbutz Shoval. She grew up in Rehovot, the daughter of a father who immigrated from Morocco and a mother who immigrated from Egypt. In her childhood, she studied at Smilansky Elementary School and at Amos de-Shalit High School in Rehovot. In 1973, she joined the "Rehovot Urban Youth Stage" as a soloist. Upon her conscription to the IDF, she was assigned to the Artillery Corps, completed the fighter training course, and served in an artillery battalion. Subsequently, she served as an officer in Engineering Battalion 601, commanding a battery, and was discharged with the rank of lieutenant. At the beginning of her reserve service, she continued to serve as an officer, but after several years became a singer in the reserves and an examiner for military bands. Her younger brother Yoav died of cancer during the First Lebanon War. Robes wrote about him the songs "Tomorrow He Will Return" and "A Small Letter." ## Career ### Beginnings Robes began her musical career as a backing guitarist for successful singers including Yael Levi, Erik Sini, Mati Kaspi, and Shlomo Artzi. Her first television exposure was in 1980 on the program "One More Hit," as a backing singer for Edna Lev. ### Albums Her debut album, "Frames," was released in late 1983, arranged and produced by Mati Kaspi. The album was not commercially successful, but achieved gold album status in 2008. Her second album, "Faces and Names" (1987), was produced by Nathan Cohen and was more successful, achieving platinum album status. Following its release, Robes embarked on a concert tour with keyboardist Dobi Angler. Her third album, "On the Way to Happiness" (1989), achieved great success. The song "How He Sang" was the most played song on radio and television that year. The album achieved platinum album status, and Robes won the title of Singer of the Year. Her fourth album, "In the First Person" (1991), did not replicate the success of the previous album. In 1993, she released her most rock-oriented album, "Cypresses and Sunflowers." In 1993-1994, she produced a show titled "Let It Be," dedicated to the band's songs. In 1999, she participated in a concert by Sir George Martin and the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra featuring Beatles songs. In the 2000s, she returned to perform in a show of Beatles songs titled "Dani Robes Sings and Tells Beatles." ### Radio and Television In the 1980s, Robes participated in the radio program "What's Up" on IDF Radio. In the early 1990s, she appeared on the television program "The Arab World." In 1992, she appeared with Dodo Zar on the program "Pretty Butterfly." In 1993, she appeared on a program for Israel's Fallen Soldiers Memorial Day. In 1994, she participated in the program "Hopa Hey" with two of her daughters. Several of her albums achieved platinum album status, and her first album achieved gold album status. Her song "A Small Letter" with Ofira Yoseffi became a popular song at memorial ceremonies. The song "Something New Begins" received approximately 16.5 million views on YouTube. On November 23, 2023, she released a new version of her song "Tomorrow He Will Return." On March 27, 2024, she collaborated with Dani Basan on the song "What's Left for Me After the War." On May 8, 2024, she released the song "Every Person Needs a Home," written by Sergeant Yahel Gazit, who fell during fighting in Shejaia. That same year, she led a public awareness campaign by the Ministry of Defense ahead of Israel's Fallen Soldiers Memorial Day, in which she performed her song "Faces and Names" with the IDF Orchestra. ## Personal Life Robes was married to Dina for 30 years and had three daughters together. She separated from her wife, then returned to her, before they separated permanently. She subsequently remarried but divorced after two months. Her second wife, Roni Robes, appeared as a backing singer in some of her performances. On June 4, 2009, Robes married for the third time to singer Ilail Tamir, and the couple has two children together. Robes resides in Kfar Qish.
